Students in Y8 and Y9 at Footscray City College are involved in the Marine Education Pro- gram through TeachWild.Students and teachers have the opportunity to get involved in hands-on field research across Australia. Marine debris affects more than 270 species of marine animals worldwide, however little is known about the impact on Australia’s wildlife. Marine debris affects the entire food chain, but we know very little about the full impacts. Students and teachers at Footscray City College have the opportunity to get involved in hands-on field research. TeachWild will survey and map the distribution of marine debris to better understand marine debris and its impacts on Australian wildlife. Students at the College have identified a site close to Williamstown Beach to carry out a beach survey and will be visiting this site to complete transect studies. During the Term One vacation, I was given the opportunity to take part in an exciting Earth- Watch scientific field trip to Phillip Island. This involved similar field research to that which will be undertaken by the Year 8 and 9 students involved in the Teach Wild program. The highlights of the field trip included A presentation on recent research of Phillip Island’s penguin colony Completing transect studies on marine debris (eg fishing nets, rope, polystyrene and plenty of hard plastic) Necropsies of recently dead birds including penguins, revealing the ingestion of a lot of plastic waste A presentation on seal entanglement at Seal Rocks The whole week was filled with science learning experiences which were of immeasurable professional value for us as educators and will certainly be beneficial in enriching the learn ing experiences of our students. To avoid confusion the events will run regardless of weather/viewing conditions. To kick start these events FCC is lucky enough to have Dr. Alan Duffy, Melbourne University astrophysicist, sharing his experience at the recent Federation Square event asking the question Are we alone in this vast universe, or are there planets outside our solar system teeming with life? Proceedings begin at 6:30pm until approximately 8:30pm and will consist of a talk from Dr. Duffy in conjunction with viewing of the night sky with the schools telescope.
Engineers Without Borders will visit some year 9 science classes to deliver a water filtration module. The water filter module involves the issue of access to clean drinking water in places like Cambodia, East Timor and Nepal. The workshop gets the students to break into groups representing a ‘country’ and then each country needs to buy the materials to build a basic water filter. At the end of the workshop dirty water is poured through the water filters, with the aim to have the water come out as clean as possible. We then have a short class discussion about how we might solve these problems in the real world. More information about Engineers Without Borders can be found at http://www.ewb.org.au/ On a similar note the FCC Environmental Justice Club had its first meeting on Friday to discuss the way forward. They will initially be fundraising for Sea Shepherd the anti-whaling group and further activities will be student driven. Any students interested in joining this group may contact Elaine Rose (Science staffroom) for further information.

On Thursday the 18th of April 9C ventured to Williamstown harbor to explore the Sea Shepherd boats. We were guided through the Steve Irwin and the Sam Simon. Our guides explained the important role they play in keeping our ocean balanced and saving the whale species from extinction. We really enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about how a working ship operates, and the predicaments faced when living in Antarctica, while trying to save a species. Many of the students are now thinking about becoming members of Sea Shepherd when they are older, or finding ways to fundraise and help Sea Shepherd continue their mission, as they are only funded by donations. In their last campaign Sea Shepherd saved 932 whales from slaughter. 9C is now discussing the importance of our oceans and is looking forward to making a difference.
